Lebanese Army Detains 12 Hezbollah Members After They Rocket-Launch Israel

The Lebanese army has reportedly detained 12 Hezbollah members after a volley of rocket fire on Israel, as judicial authorities order a broader pursuit of those responsible.

This significant development occurred on Tuesday, as local media reported that the Lebanese military moved to apprehend individuals linked to recent attacks. The Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBCI) stated that the army detained 12 Hezbollah members at a checkpoint, though further specific details regarding the arrests were not immediately provided. Concurrently, judicial authorities have issued orders for the pursuit of all those responsible for launching rockets and drones from Lebanese territory toward Israel. This action by the Lebanese army and judiciary signals a potential attempt to assert state authority and de-escalate tensions.

These recent attacks from Lebanon came amidst a backdrop of severe and ongoing regional conflict. The report highlights that the latest launches followed what are described as repeated Israeli violations of a ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024. These alleged violations have reportedly resulted in the tragic loss of life, killing and wounding hundreds of people in Lebanon. Furthermore, the report notes that Israel continues to occupy five Lebanese hilltops seized during the latest war, in addition to other Lebanese areas it has held for decades, which remains a continuous point of contention and a source of friction.

In direct response to these launches from Lebanon, the Israeli army retaliated with a series of airstrikes. These airstrikes across Lebanon killed at least 40 people and injured nearly 250 others, dramatically escalating the human cost of the renewed hostilities.

The detention of Hezbollah members by the Lebanese army, following these intense exchanges, is a critical development. It suggests an internal effort within Lebanon to prevent further escalation and to enforce stability, potentially reflecting international pressure or a domestic desire to avoid a full scale conflict. Hezbollah, a powerful political party and armed group, wields significant influence in parts of Lebanon, making such arrests politically sensitive.

The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) and other international bodies will be closely monitoring these developments, urging all parties to exercise restraint and adhere to the principles of international law. The cycle of cross-border attacks and retaliations threatens to plunge the region into a wider conflict, with devastating humanitarian consequences.

The actions taken by the Lebanese army and judicial authorities will be crucial in determining whether a fragile peace can be maintained or if the region is on the brink of further escalation.
