Why Nigerian Politicians are Regarded as Thieves

By Africa News Connect

In the court of public opinion, the verdict on Nigeria’s political class is often harsh, swift, and seemingly unanimous. For decades, the image of the Nigerian public office holder has been inextricably linked with allegations of graft, embezzlement, and self-enrichment. While there are exceptions to every rule, the pervasive sentiment that politicians are "thieves" is not merely an expression of frustration; it is a deep-seated belief rooted in systemic failures, ostensibly ill-gotten wealth, and a breakdown of the social contract.

The primary driver of this perception is the jarring socio-economic disparity between the governing elite and the governed. In a nation where a significant demographic grapples with multi-dimensional poverty, unemployment, and decaying infrastructure, the lifestyle of the political class often appears ostentatious. When constituents witness leaders whose official salaries are public knowledge acquiring private jets, luxury real estate in high-brow locations abroad, and fleets of exotic vehicles shortly after assuming office, the mathematical disconnect leads to a presumption of theft.

This perception is further calcified by the opacity of government spending. Budgetary processes are frequently dogged by accusations of "padding", the artificial inflation of project costs to siphon funds. The phenomenon of "security votes", billions of naira allocated to governors and other high-ranking officials for security purposes without the requirement of auditing or accountability, is widely viewed by civil society as a legalized conduit for misappropriation. When public funds vanish without a corresponding improvement in public services like healthcare, education, or roads, the citizenry inevitably concludes that the treasury is being treated as a private fiefdom.

Furthermore, the monetization of the electoral process plays a critical role in this narrative. The cost of securing a party nomination and funding a campaign in Nigeria is astronomically high, often running into billions of naira. Consequently, political office is frequently treated not as a platform for service, but as an investment vehicle. The pressure to recoup campaign expenditures and settle "godfathers" political patrons who sponsor candidates, creates a cycle where access to the treasury becomes the primary objective of governance.

The justice system’s historical inability to swiftly and decisively prosecute high-profile corruption cases also fuels public cynicism. While anti-graft agencies frequently announce arrests and seizures of assets, convictions are comparatively rare. The sight of politicians facing grave corruption charges utilizing plea bargains, securing perpetual injunctions against prosecution, or returning to the senate floor rather than a prison cell reinforces the belief that the law is selective. To the average Nigerian, this culture of impunity is tacit confirmation of guilt.

Finally, the breakdown of trust is exacerbated by unfulfilled promises. When administrations repeatedly pledge to curb waste and fight corruption, yet the cost of governance continues to balloon while subsidies for the poor are removed, the narrative of the "political thief" is reinforced.

Until there is rigorous institutional reform, genuine transparency in public procurement, and a justice system that holds power to account without fear or favor, the label of "thief" will likely remain the default descriptor for the Nigerian politician. It is a crisis of legitimacy that threatens the very fabric of the nation’s democracy.
