The Lagos State Government has refunded N23.2 million to subscribers of the Egan-Igando Mixed Housing Scheme.
This significant financial action was undertaken by the Lagos State Ministry of Housing on Tuesday, as it disbursed a total of N23.2 million in refunds to verified subscribers of the Egan-Igando Mixed Housing scheme. This move addresses concerns stemming from delays in the project's timeline and provides restitution to affected individuals.
The housing scheme, having been transferred to the Ministry of Housing, encountered an unexpected delay in its projected delivery. This unforeseen circumstance prompted some subscribers, who had previously made partial payments towards their housing units, to choose to withdraw from the scheme. These individuals subsequently opted for a refund of their initial investments. The government's decision to facilitate these refunds reflects its responsiveness to the subscribers' concerns and a commitment to fair dealings.
Speaking on the matter, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Abdulhafis Gbolahan Toriola, provided further clarification on the scheme's status. He emphasized that for those subscribers who chose to remain with the project and completed their payments after the housing scheme's transfer, their respective housing units have been duly allocated. Mr. Toriola underscored the government’s resolve to ensure that no citizen is unfairly disadvantaged, highlighting a balanced approach that caters to both those seeking refunds and those committed to their allocations.
Ensuring the integrity of the refund process was also a key priority. The Director of Accounts for the Ministry, Mrs. Yesirat Adewale, confirmed that a rigorous verification process was undertaken. She stated that the authenticity and validity of all relevant documentation were thoroughly confirmed before the issuance of cheques. This meticulous approach ensures that every refund was processed in strict compliance with established financial regulations, thereby guaranteeing transparency and accountability in the disbursement of public funds.
This action by the Lagos State Government serves as a positive indicator of its dedication to protecting the interests of its citizens in housing development initiatives. It reinforces the importance of trust between government and the populace, especially in projects that involve substantial financial commitments from individuals.
The refund process for the Egan-Igando Mixed Housing scheme demonstrates the government's willingness to rectify issues arising from project delays and to uphold its promises to its citizens.
