Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has issued a strong statement arguing why former Governor El-Rufai should face immediate prosecution, highlighting what he describes as a contentious record.
The debate surrounding Malam El-Rufai intensified following an alleged attempt by security operatives to arrest him at an airport, an incident that has drawn widespread reaction. Now, Ambassador-designate Reno Omokri has entered the fray, not only reacting to the airport incident but also pointing to what he views as a history of alleged transgressions by the former governor.
In a sharp critique, Omokri highlighted what he termed El-Rufai’s contentious record during his tenure as governor of Kaduna State. Omokri specifically cited instances where El-Rufai allegedly took action against those who reported negatively on him. He wrote: “Nasir el-Rufai arrested multiple journalists and activists for covering him negatively, including: Jacob Onjewu Dickson, Segun Onibiyo, Midat Joseph and Audu Maikori.” This accusation points to concerns about press freedom and the rights of activists under El-Rufai's administration, issues that often resonate deeply within the public discourse.

Furthermore, Omokri directly addressed the serious allegations of financial impropriety leveled against the former governor. He stated: “Nasir el-Rufai is fingered in the alleged theft of ₦423 billion during his tenure by no less a body than the Kaduna State House of Assembly. He is not above the law or above arrest. He should not resist legal arrest or try to blame others for his alleged crimes.” This reference to a massive alleged financial malfeasance, reportedly uncovered by the Kaduna State House of Assembly, significantly escalates the calls for accountability. Omokri's statement firmly asserts that no individual, regardless of their past office, should be immune from legal scrutiny or due process.
The background to Omokri's call for prosecution is the alleged airport incident itself. Reports indicate that during the attempted arrest, DSS operatives allegedly seized El-Rufai’s international passport. This particular action sparked immediate outrage among bystanders at the airport, who reportedly insisted on due process being followed. El-Rufai’s legal team has since condemned this move as “unlawful” and “a flagrant violation of constitutional rights,” demanding the immediate return of his passport and a public apology.
The clash between these two narratives, Omokri's insistence on past accountability and El-Rufai's legal team's claims of rights violations, highlights the deep divisions and complexities within Nigeria's political landscape. On one side, there are demands for justice regarding alleged past abuses of power and financial misconduct. On the other, there are strong appeals to uphold constitutional rights and ensure that all legal procedures are strictly followed, even in the pursuit of justice.
The incident and subsequent reactions underscore the ongoing national conversation about governance, accountability, and the rule of law in Nigeria. As the situation unfolds, all eyes will be on how legal and state institutions navigate these allegations and demands, against a backdrop of intense political scrutiny.
