The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has prolonged the detention of former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, as his legal team scrambles to secure his bail, amidst a probe into an alleged N432 billion fraud.
Malam Nasir El-Rufai, a prominent figure in Nigerian politics, voluntarily arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja on Monday morning, precisely around 10 a.m. He presented himself for questioning in relation to an alleged N432 billion corruption probe, an investigation that has been a subject of intense public and political interest.
Despite his voluntary appearance, Governor El-Rufai was subsequently detained at the commission, where investigators have reportedly continued to grill him extensively. This extended questioning signals the gravity and complexity of the allegations he faces.
A source familiar with the investigation, speaking on condition of anonymity, provided insight into the EFCC's decision to detain the former governor. The source indicated that “The investigators need some time with him to answer questions arising from his eight years as governor in Kaduna State.” This statement suggests that the EFCC's inquiry is comprehensive, delving into various financial dealings and decisions made throughout his two terms in office.
The detention comes despite previous assurances from El-Rufai's legal team that they had been in communication with the EFCC since December 2025 and had formally notified the commission of his voluntary appearance on Monday, February 16, 2026. This pre arranged cooperation had led some to believe that his appearance would be less contentious.
However, the EFCC's decision to hold him underscores its prerogative to detain individuals for further questioning when investigations are ongoing, particularly in cases involving significant financial allegations. The agency's mandate is to combat economic and financial crimes, and it often exercises its powers to ensure thorough investigations.
Meanwhile, Governor El-Rufai’s legal team is now actively working to secure his release on bail. The legal battle is expected to intensify as his lawyers challenge the prolonged detention and seek to uphold his fundamental rights. The case is likely to draw considerable attention, given El-Rufai's political stature and the substantial sum involved in the alleged corruption probe.
This development serves as a powerful reminder of the Nigerian government's ongoing fight against corruption, a key promise of the current administration. It signals a willingness by anti graft agencies to pursue investigations involving high profile individuals, regardless of their political affiliations or past positions.
The coming days will be critical as El-Rufai's legal team pursues all available avenues for his release, while the EFCC continues its in depth investigation into the alleged financial irregularities.
