Deadly Israeli Strikes Target Refugee Camps In Southern Lebanon

A deadly Israeli strike has targeted a Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, raising fears of a broader conflict and sparking widespread condemnation.

According to reports from the Palestinian Red Crescent, the incident occurred on Friday, resulting in significant casualties. Two people were killed, and three others were injured in an Israeli drone strike on the Ain al-Hilweh Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon. This attack marks what the Red Crescent described as the latest violation of a ceasefire deal reached in 2024.

Ain al-Hilweh is the largest Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon, home to tens of thousands of refugees, and has historically been a flashpoint for various forms of violence and instability. The targeting of such a densely populated civilian area is particularly alarming.

This is not the first time this specific area has been targeted. The Israeli army carried out a similar strike in November 2025 on the same area, an incident that resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people and left several others injured. Following that previous strike, the Israeli army claimed that the attack targeted Hamas members inside the camp. It was further alleged by Israeli authorities that the targeted facility was being used to plot attacks against Israel.

The latest attacks come amid a period of heightened cross border tensions and what are described as repeated Israeli violations of the ceasefire agreement reached in November 2024. These alleged violations have reportedly resulted in the killing and wounding of hundreds of Lebanese citizens. Furthermore, the report highlights that Israel continues to occupy five Lebanese hilltops seized during the latest war, in addition to other Lebanese areas it has held for decades. This ongoing occupation of Lebanese territory remains a significant point of contention and a source of continuous friction.

The broader context of this strike involves the long standing conflict between Israel and militant groups operating from Lebanese soil, particularly Hezbollah, as well as Palestinian factions present in the refugee camps. While Israel claims to target militants, the strikes often result in civilian casualties and damage to civilian infrastructure, drawing strong international criticism.

The Lebanese government has yet to issue a full official statement at this hour, but such incidents typically lead to strong condemnations and calls for international intervention to uphold the ceasefire and de-escalate tensions. The UN peacekeeping force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) will likely be called upon to investigate the incident and assess whether the 2024 ceasefire agreement has indeed been violated.

The killing of civilians in a refugee camp underscores the urgent need for a lasting resolution to the conflict and for strict adherence to international humanitarian law by all parties. The ongoing cycle of violence not only claims innocent lives but also further destabilizes an already fragile region.
