Breaking: El-Rufai Re-arrested Immediately After Release From EFCC Detention

In a dramatic turn of events, Nasir El-Rufai has reportedly been rearrested immediately after being granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This late breaking development follows a period of intense scrutiny and legal maneuvering surrounding the former governor. Malam El-Rufai was reportedly granted bail by the EFCC at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening. However, his freedom was short-lived. According to witnesses at the scene, as he exited the premises of the EFCC headquarters, he was immediately picked up by armed operatives who had reportedly laid an ambush for him. This rearrest suggests a coordinated effort by different security agencies.

The events of today are the latest in a series of fast-paced developments since Mr. El-Rufai’s recent return to the country from Cairo, Egypt. His troubles began last Thursday, when security operatives attempted to arrest him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, shortly after he arrived from Cairo.

Videos circulating online at the time depicted a brief confrontation between security personnel and the former governor’s entourage. During this encounter, his international passport was reportedly confiscated, and he engaged in heated exchanges with the security personnel. Witnesses at the airport claimed that officials briefly seized his international passport before he was escorted out amid chants from his supporters, who insisted on adherence to due process.

The sequence of events escalated on Monday when the State Security Service (SSS), also known as the DSS, became involved. On Monday, the SSS charged El-Rufai with cybercrimes before the Federal High Court in Abuja. This charge is reportedly linked to an allegation of phone-tapping, adding another legal dimension to the ongoing saga.

El-Rufai's legal team has consistently condemned these actions, labeling the initial airport incident as "unlawful" and "a flagrant violation of constitutional rights." They had been working to secure his release from EFCC custody and were successful in obtaining bail, only for this rearrest to occur moments later.

This latest development raises significant questions about inter-agency coordination, due process, and the rights of citizens, particularly high-profile political figures, in Nigeria. The immediate rearrest after bail suggests that multiple state apparatuses may be involved in the ongoing investigations and legal proceedings against the former governor.

The legal and political ramifications of this incident are expected to be substantial. Supporters of El-Rufai are likely to voice strong objections to what they may perceive as an abuse of power, while security agencies will likely maintain that they are acting within the bounds of their mandate to investigate alleged offenses.
