Wike Totally Absent From The 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day

Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike was conspicuously missing on Thursday while high-ranking government and military personnel gathered in Abuja for the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day. The yearly event at Eagle Square pays tribute to military members who gave their lives for the country while acknowledging the efforts of veterans and active-duty officers.

Minister of State for the FCT Mariya Mahmoud Bunkure was present at the event, and her arrival coincided with that of Vice President Kashim Shettima. As a result, protocol officials refused her entry to the dais during the general salute. She then accompanied the Vice President and other officials in placing wreaths at the cenotaph.

Important figures in attendance were Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere Ekun, and Defence Minister Mohammed Badaru. They were joined by Chief of Defence Staff Christopher Musa, the Service Chiefs, members of the Diplomatic Corps, and Nigerian Legion Chairperson Grace Morenike Henry.

Officials did not offer any formal reason for Mr. Wike's absence, who typically has a significant role in the events. His absence follows a reported disagreement late last year between the Minister and a naval officer concerning property access in the capital.

The occasion included traditional military rituals, such as artillery salutes, volley firings, a moment of silence, and the release of doves to represent national peace and harmony.
