60-year Old Victim Of A Church Raid Escapes
A sixty-year-old survivor, identified protectively as "Sarah Peter" bears visible physical trauma and a heavy bandage on her skull following a violent raid on a place of worship in Kurmin Wali, a community in northern Nigeria.
While she and 10 others successfully escaped, the local branch of the Christian Association of Nigeria estimates that more than 160 individuals remain unaccounted for. This mass abduction has left the remaining villagers devastated and fearful of further violence, particularly given the community's proximity to the Rijana forest, a known hideout for the armed gangs and "bandits" responsible for a surge in regional kidnappings.
The immediate aftermath of the attack was marked by administrative confusion and allegations of a cover-up. For 48 hours, local police and state officials vehemently denied the incident occurred, characterizing the reports as "falsehoods" spread by "conflict entrepreneurs." Although officials later confirmed the events, citing a need for preliminary verification, residents have accused authorities of attempting to suppress information and intimidate witnesses.
The tension in Kurmin Wali is palpable. Access to the village has been restricted, but the scene inside the affected churches remains frozen in chaos, with overturned plastic chairs, scattered prayer books, and broken musical instruments serving as evidence of the disruption. Survivors, including a father who narrowly escaped with his two-year-old daughter, now face a precarious reality as the search for the missing continues without official confirmation of casualty figures.
