While addressing an audience on Tuesday at the Ake Palace in Abeokuta during a free medical outreach organized by the Yoruba Nurses of North America, the king observed that this trend has resulted in increased financial contributions and a heightened involvement in economic growth. He pointed out that remittances sent by Nigerians living abroad have surged to the point where they now rank just below oil revenue in foreign earnings. Oba Gbadebo mentioned that although the initial wave of migration raised concerns about the economy, many citizens are returning to lend their support and enhance the nation

The traditional leader noted that Nigeria is second globally in remittance rankings, following India, and highlighted that a significant number of those who emigrated are coming back as skilled professionals, traditional leaders, and entrepreneurs. He encouraged those possessing in-demand skills overseas to seek international opportunities but emphasized the importance of returning to assist in the wellbeing of their communities and the economy

Dr. Adebisi Allison, the President of the association, remarked that the outreach reflects a commitment to enhancing health outcomes throughout the South West region via a community-driven approach. She acknowledged that the Nigerian healthcare sector continues to encounter issues such as insufficient facilities, limited service access, high costs, and a disjointed structure. The organization seeks to address these challenges by promoting fair access to vital services and establishing collaborations with governmental and community entities.

Following earlier missions in Osun and Lagos states, this ongoing program is planned from December 16 to December 20, 2025. The outreach will take place in Abeokuta, Ilaro, Sagamu, Remo, and Ijebu Imushin. The services offered will include general health checkups, screenings for blood pressure and glucose levels, eye and dental care, breast cancer awareness, mental health counseling, free medications, and sponsoring health insurance for patients needing follow-up treatment.

Recent statistics reveal that the number of Nigerians residing abroad has reached roughly 2.1 million, with annual remittances estimated at 21 billion dollars.
