Lawmakers have called on the federal government to leverage frameworks offered by the Economic Community of West African States and the African Union to promote collaboration and the swift release of the detained military personnel and equipment. Furthermore, the Office of the National Security Adviser has been urged to manage interagency communication to tackle national security issues without heightening tensions. The legislature also suggested that the government provide accurate public updates to counter misinformation while protecting sensitive diplomatic negotiations.
The situation concerns a Nigerian Air Force C 130 aircraft that was on an authorized ferry flight to Portugal for scheduled maintenance. This routine requirement for its lifecycle led to a precautionary stop in Burkina Faso on December 8, 2025. The flight was reportedly documented and carried out in adherence to international aviation standards. Officials stressed that the landing was based solely on safety concerns and that the aircraft was not engaged in operational tasks or intelligence-gathering missions.
Voicing dissatisfaction with the ongoing detention, the House directed its Committees on Foreign Affairs, Defence, Nigerian Air Force, and National Security to engage with the Ministry of Defence and relevant bodies. These committees are tasked with examining all matters related to the aircraft and crew, with a report expected within two weeks.
