Wike And Former Chief of Naval Staff In A Standoff

Tensions flared in the Gaduwa District of Abuja on Tuesday when military forces allegedly prevented the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, from halting an unauthorized construction project on a disputed parcel of land. The armed personnel were reportedly operating under the orders of retired Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo, who previously served as Chief of Naval Staff during President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.

The conflict began when officials from the FCT Administration (FCTA) sought to enforce a demolition order on what they deemed an illegal structure on Plot 1946. They faced staunch opposition from uniformed soldiers who were guarding the site.

The situation intensified with the arrival of Minister Wike, who was joined by the FCT Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye, along with other senior officials. The military personnel initially prevented the minister from accessing the area. Despite the efforts of the commanding officer, identified as Naval Air Vice Marshal Yerima, to block his entry, the minister's security detail assisted him in reaching the site for inspection.

Wike expressed his anger, denouncing the incident as a clear case of "land grabbing" and stated that his administration would not be cowed by any entity, irrespective of their power. He declared that the development constituted an illegality that would not be allowed to persist. The minister accused the developers of constructing on government-owned land without the requisite approvals or title documents, emphasizing that all land dealings within the territory must comply with established procedures.

In reply, the naval officer in charge mentioned that his team was acting on directives from their higher-ups. He argued that the relevant documents pertaining to the land had been presented to the necessary authorities for verification, adamantly insisting that the construction was not unlawful.

This confrontation underscores the ongoing initiatives by the Wike-led FCT Administration to tackle illegal land development and encroachment across the capital, a campaign that has often pitted the administration against powerful individuals and organizations.
