The Nigerian Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, informed troops on Friday that the next operational phase against the insurgent groups Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province would be decisive. This declaration follows public statements from United States President Donald Trump threatening potential military action if Nigeria does not stop violence directed at Christians.

Addressing soldiers of Operation Hadin Kai in Maiduguri, General Shaibu emphasized that the military is entering a critical stage of its campaign where failure is not an option. He stated that the necessary combat enablers and new platforms have been provided to ensure a successful outcome, signaling a different strategic approach.
General Shaibu conveyed that the responsibility for delivering a conclusive blow to the extremist factions now rests with a new generation of soldiers. He challenged them to exceed the accomplishments of previous forces who served in past domestic and international operations.
The army chief's warning comes as security analysts note a shift in the conflict. While both Boko Haram and ISWAP have been weakened, they are reportedly exploiting porous borders, difficult terrain, and the Lake Chad basin to regroup. Analysts also suggest that global geopolitical tensions, foreign extremist propaganda, and disruptions to arms trafficking routes could present opportunities for renewed militant activity.
To bolster the campaign, Shaibu confirmed that experienced officers have been deployed to the theater of operations alongside upgraded equipment. This suggests an expanded use of advanced surveillance systems, enhanced mobility assets, and precision strike capabilities.
For many soldiers present, some of whom have lost colleagues in the region, the message was direct. "Those before you have done it," Shaibu said. "This is your own time."
In a notable departure from military convention, the army chief also dedicated time to addressing troop welfare, describing it as essential for maintaining morale and high performance on the front lines.
