Speaking in Kaduna on Tuesday at a lecture commemorating Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary, the governor delivered a message of optimism. The event, held at the Arewa House Auditorium, was themed “65th Year of Nigeria Independence: The Journey So Far with the Renewed Hope Agenda in View.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu affirmed that the nation would overcome its obstacles, including poverty, hunger, and terrorism, echoing sentiments expressed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He highlighted the Federal Government's Renewed Hope Agenda as a comprehensive framework designed to drive economic growth, enhance infrastructure, develop human capital, and reform governance.
He explained that this national vision encourages state governments to create aligned policies. Citing his own administration as an example, Sanwo-Olu noted that the Lagos State THEMES+ program corresponds directly with the federal agenda, with a strong focus on infrastructure, human capital development, economic diversification through tourism and entertainment, robust security, governance reform, and social inclusion.
The governor also praised the significant fiscal and governance reforms undertaken by the Tinubu administration. He pointed to the removal of the petrol subsidy, the unification of foreign exchange rates, and the enactment of new tax legislation as critical measures that fortify the nation's capacity to tackle its economic and security issues effectively.
Addressing the theme of national unity, Sanwo-Olu spoke directly to recent assertions from the United States regarding religious persecution in Nigeria, stressing the need for cohesion among all faiths. He stated that Nigeria is a proudly multiethnic and multireligious nation where the bonds that unite its people are far stronger than any forces of division. He affirmed a collective conviction in a shared national destiny.
Furthermore, Sanwo-Olu advocated for a localized, bottom up approach to governance, particularly in addressing insecurity. He underscored the importance of establishing state policing and granting autonomy to local governments as essential instruments for strengthening community safety and ensuring that development and prosperity are accessible in every part of the country. He concluded by emphasizing the necessity of adopting local solutions for local problems to achieve comprehensive security and progress nationwide.
