China To USA: Leave Nigeria Alone

China has issued a warning against interference in Nigeria’s domestic affairs following threats by United States President Donald Trump to deploy military forces over the alleged killings of Christians in the country. The two nations maintain strong political and economic ties, with significant partnerships in infrastructure and trade. In recent years, Nigeria and China have reinforced their strategic relationship through trade, development financing, and multilateral cooperation.

Speaking to journalists today, Tuesday, November 4, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Mao Ning, reaffirmed her country's support for Nigeria as a “comprehensive strategic partner.” She urged respect for national sovereignty and for development paths that align with local conditions.

Ning stated that China firmly supports the Nigerian government in guiding its people along a development path suited to its national conditions. She emphasized that Beijing opposes any country using religion or human rights as a pretext to interfere in another nation's internal affairs.

Her remarks were a response to recent statements from President Trump, who suggested the U.S. could deploy ground troops or conduct airstrikes in Nigeria to "halt the killing of Christians." Trump made these comments to reporters aboard Air Force One on a Sunday while returning to Washington from his vacation home in Florida. When questioned about the possibility of deploying troops or launching airstrikes, Trump replied, “Could be.”

“They’re killing record numbers of Christians in Nigeria … They’re killing the Christians and killing them in very large numbers. We’re not going to allow that to happen,” Trump stated.

Previously, the Trump administration had placed Nigeria on a “Special Watch List” for what it termed violations of religious freedom. This action was accompanied by warnings that continued violence against Christians could lead to an immediate suspension of U.S. aid and a possible military intervention.
