Operation Epic Fury Consumes Over $5.82 billion in just 100 hours

The first 100 hours of "Operation Epic Fury" have reportedly cost US forces an estimated $5.82 billion, representing approximately 0.69% of the entire 2026 US defense budget. This staggering figure, compiled by Anadolu, highlights the immense financial implications of military engagements in the region.

The analysis breaks down the significant costs incurred during the initial phase of these intensified military operations, detailing substantial losses in critical military assets and offensive expenditures.

A primary contributor to these losses is a vital US early warning radar system. According to the report, a US AN/FPS-132 early warning radar system at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar, valued at $1.1 billion, was struck by an Iranian missile on Saturday. Qatar has since confirmed that the radar was indeed hit and sustained damage, underscoring the effectiveness of the Iranian strike.

The incidents continued to mount on Sunday, with a regrettable friendly fire incident. Three F-15E Strike Eagles were lost due to Kuwaiti air defenses. While all six aircrew miraculously survived the incident, the aircraft did not, with the estimated replacement cost for these advanced fighter jets pegged at $282 million.

Further losses in aerial assets have also been reported. US officials, speaking to CBS News, confirmed that three MQ-9 Reaper Surveillance and Attack Drones belonging to the US Air Force have been downed so far, at an estimated cost of $90 million. These drones are crucial for intelligence gathering and precision strikes, making their loss significant.

Iran's initial attack on Saturday also targeted key naval infrastructure. Reports indicate that Iran struck the US Navy’s Fifth Fleet headquarters in Manama, Bahrain, successfully destroying two satellite communications terminals and several large buildings. Open-source intelligence reports have identified the targeted SATCOM terminals as AN/GSC-52Bs, with an estimated cost of $20 million, factoring in deployment and installation costs.

The damage to critical radar components extends beyond Bahrain. Satellite imagery analyzed by the New York Times of Camp Arifjan in Kuwait, shows three more radomes destroyed, adding roughly 500 million each. While there are also unconfirmed reports of another system hit in the UAE, official confirmation or supporting satellite imagery is still awaited.

Altogether, Iran is estimated to have damaged $2.52 billion worth of US military assets in the region.

Beyond these asset losses, the offensive costs of "Operation Epic Fury" are also substantial. According to analysis by the CSIS, Anadolu’s initial estimate of 3.1 billion to replenish the US munitions inventory on a like-for-like basis for the first 100 hours, with these costs increasing by $758.1 million per day.

The continuous presence of major naval assets also adds to the daily expenditure. As the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Gerald R. Ford aircraft carriers remain in the region with their contingent of destroyers and littoral combat ships, they continue to expend an estimated $15 million a day.

Finally, US defensive systems have been heavily engaged in intercepting Iranian attacks. According to estimates by the Payne Institute, the US has fired approximately 180 SM-2/SM-3/SM-6 naval interceptors, 90 Patriot PAC-2/PAC-3 missiles, and 40 THAAD interceptors. These advanced interceptor missiles represent a significant additional cost.

The combined financial toll underscores the immense economic burden of modern warfare and the sophisticated nature of the military engagements in the Middle East.
