Lagos Government Investigates Suspected Negligence in the Death of Chimamanda’s Son

The Lagos State Government has ordered a thorough investigation into the alleged medical negligence linked to the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the young son of author Chimamanda Adichie. The 21-month-old died last Thursday at a private healthcare facility in Lagos after experiencing a brief illness.

Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the Governor's Special Adviser on Health, referred to the situation as a significant tragedy. As a result, Governor Babajide Sanwo Olu has instructed the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency to perform an immediate, independent, and transparent examination to determine both the immediate and underlying causes of death. The agency has already visited the hospital to evaluate the claims and check adherence to clinical protocols, professional standards, and patient safety measures.

To ensure the inquiry's integrity, state authorities will work alongside the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and other pertinent regulatory agencies. The government has assured the public that the results will be disclosed once the investigation is completed to promote accountability. In addition, officials stressed that anyone or any institution found guilty of negligence or professional misconduct will face legal consequences in accordance with the law.

Adichie has publicly claimed that the death was a result of criminal negligence, accusing the attending anesthesiologist of having carelessly treated her child. She noted that the boy initially showed signs of a mild cold which quickly developed into a severe infection.
